Kinoglot
Need help with Kinoglot? Email perseus.sepahi@uwaterloo.ca. Please include your macOS version and, if a file won't play, its format (for example MKV with HEVC video).
Requirements
A Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later.
Making AI subtitles
- Open a video with speech.
- Click the sparkle button in the controls, or press I, then Generate Subtitles.
- The first time, download the speech model when asked (Whisper Large v3 Turbo, 574 MB). Smaller models are in Settings ▸ Speech to Text.
The part you're watching is transcribed first. Subtitles are saved, so reopening the video brings them back instantly.
Translating subtitles
Pick a language under Translate in the AI panel. Kinoglot needs one of these:
- Ollama (free and private): install it from ollama.com. Kinoglot finds it and downloads the recommended translation model from Settings ▸ Translation.
- Your own API key for OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude) or Google Gemini, entered in Settings ▸ Translation.
Subtitle files next to a video
macOS only lets App Store apps read the files you open. To load subtitle files that sit next to a video, choose Subtitles ▸ Find Subtitles Next to This Video and click Allow. Kinoglot remembers the folder. You can also drag a subtitle file onto the window.
Kinoglot Pro
- The player is free. AI subtitles and translation are free for your first 2 hours of watching with AI subtitles on screen.
- Kinoglot Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks them for good. No subscription.
- Bought Pro on another Mac, or reinstalled? Choose Restore Purchases in the Kinoglot Pro window or in Settings ▸ General, signed in with the same Apple Account.
- Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
A file won't play
Kinoglot plays almost every format, but protected (DRM) videos, such as purchases from other stores, can't be played by any third-party player. If a normal file fails, please email me its format and I'll look into it.
